Vintage Sunflower

Sunflowers have a special place in my heart.  They always take me back to my grandfather’s Illinois garden.  As children, my brother and I loved to wander the tidy paths in this magical place with the giant, majestic sunflowers that floated over our heads.  They were truly the stars of the garden. Do you have a sentimental flower?

Gerberas from Whimsy Garden

Happy Weekend, Friends Through Art,

How is Gerberas from Whimsy Garden for a summery floral (summer’s almost here)?  Whimsy Garden is an imaginary place located in The Land of Whimsy where I  often go to paint.  As many artists have said, through art, one can take a little vacation without ever leaving home.

Tulip Farm in The Land of Whimsy

I’ve been playing in the paints again, so I just wanted to share this one with you.  This watercolor was inspired by an enchanting barn I spotted while visiting Upstate New York a few years ago.  It was old and full of character with many tales to tell.  This barn that called my name was perched high up on a hill next to a gnarly looking vineyard in the dead of winter.  Well, I didn’t paint the dead of winter, nor did I paint the gnarled vineyard because things are always bright and full of life in The Land of Whimsy.

Wild Roses

Wild Roses

Hey Art Friends,  Have you made time to stop and smell the roses lately?  This watercolor was inspired by one of my David Austin roses, ‘Golden Celebration.”  I’m one who would rather get a bare root rose bush in the mail for Valentine’s Day than roses from the florist.  ‘Golden Celebration’ is one of those lovely, old fashioned roses with a droopy form.  The giant blooms are perfumed with a heavenly citrus scent, which floats across the whole garden area.  Mother Nature certainly is the ultimate artist, isn’t she?  I titled this one Wild Roses because I sure came up with some wild purples when I mixed my own.  Lately, I’m challenging myself to work with a more limited palette while learning to mix more of my own colors such as “Wild Rose Purple.” 😉  Do you have a favorite rose, or a favorite wild color you’ve mixed in your artistic creations?  If you do, I’d love to hear about it in the comments section.

Until next time, let’s keep on shining and decorating the world.

The Garden Fairy Cottage

Just sharing my latest from the land of whimsy.  Have you ever wondered where garden fairies live?  Well, this is where mine lives.  I imagine she and her fairy friends sit out under the umbrellas and drink elderberry wine.  Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses, and to keep the child in all of us alive.  Until next time, let’s keep on shining.  Thanks for stopping by.

Fairy Garden Flowers was inspired by my painting music of the day, which was Wildflowers by the fabulous Tom Petty.  Isn’t the power of music a magical thing?  As those tunes floated through the room, this painting just seemed to paint itself.  I hope you’ll stop by my little gallery again.  Until next time, let’s keep shining and decorate the world.  “You belong somewhere you feel free.”  – Tom Petty
